The Cal offense (#25) is very good, but they haven't had great back to back weeks. Teams with big offensive/defensive splits often get the better unit into trouble; which the model accounts for, but the final score doesn't. They don't really get much of a reprieve this week against WSU where it will be tough sledding up hill against the defense made harder by the field position they are not going to have as they get the ball back from a kickoff.

All of this is still true:

Cal is excellent at Drive Efficiency. Davis Webb has really grown into the Dykes version of this offense and the talent on hand. This offense makes smart plays with the football and gets the yards it needs to move the chains. They are very good at Negative Drives so they avoid going 3 and out often. They also are good at Explosive Drives, but they aren't getting as many of them in Pac-12 play as they were early in the season.

Cal is pretty average at Play Efficiency, suggesting this offense takes the underneath routes, flats, and WR screens pretty often. They aren't great on 3rd down and at D-plus Plays.

Washington State's defense (#15) has been hovering in and around the top 10 defenses all season. They demolished Arizona, but Arizona probably did more than enough of the damage on their own. They really didn't cover themselves in glory in the weeks before that though. This Cal offense is going to be a challenge even if WSU has a lot of built in field position advantages.

Washington State is really excellent at Drive Efficiency. They find ways to get to you and cause drives to stall. They are very good at Negative Drives so they force you to go 3 and out pretty often. They are only sort of good at Play Efficiency and Explosive Drives. They are pretty middling, when you control for SOS, at 3rd down and D-plus Plays. This defense is just very consistent, but Cal has the talent to put up some big plays if WSU gives them the opportunity.
