Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The Oregon offense (#3) has to really struggle with not yelling at the Oregon defense as they share Phil Knight burgers at the Phil Knight Athletic Center of Burger Excellence. The Oregon offense is great this year. They have do deal with crappy field position because of their bullfighter defense, they have to play from behind, they take the blame for not making the last play, but math says these guys are very good and math is better than your feelings yo.

Oregon is excellent at Drive Efficiency, Play Efficiency, Explosive Drives, avoiding Negative Drives, on 3rd down, and at avoiding D-plus Plays. This offense is beautiful and their QB has been playing in it for all of 5 games.

I am not saying Oregon is going to score every time they get the ball. They had a rough outing against Washington State and the two turnovers didn't help. It is worth restating that when evaluating this offense, think of the field position that their defense puts them in.

Washington's defense (#28) took a step forward in their shellacking of Stanford. They had an unbelievable game and were able to get to the Stanford QB's with ease; and without blitzing. There is not a QB in the conference with Brandon Dawkins type explosiveness to deal with either, so they should have smoother sailing than they did against Arizona. This Oregon team will be a significant challenge as they can speed up the game against Washington in a way that they didn't handle well against the Wildcats.

Washington is very good at Play Efficiency, preventing Explosive Drives, and creating Negative Drives.  This is the key for them. They don't blitz often and they keep you in front of them. They are extremely disciplined. This meeting with Oregon is going to force them to play their assignments and make tackles in space; something they have been good at so far.

Washington is not very good at Drive Efficiency, and if they can improve here, they have a chance to be a serious playoff contender. They need to find ways to disrupt drives and get teams off the field instead of giving up points that they really shouldn't. They are not great on 3rd down or at creating D-plus plays, but I expect that will change as their schedule strengthens against better offenses in the Pac12.
