Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The USC offense (#46) isn't as good as they need to be to salvage any hope for this season. They beat up on ASU last week, but ASU was a paper tiger whose , much lauded, start is not going to age well as the season goes on. USC needed a game against a bad opponent to get things back on track and drown out what has to be a lot of noise going on around the program.

USC ratings have improved in some areas since they made the switch to Darnold. They are much improved at Explosive Drives, to the point that they are not quite an embarrasment, given how much talent is at the skill positions. They do not give up Negative Drives, in fact they are second in the nation at avoiding them. They are also very good at Play Efficency and pretty good at avoid D-plus Plays.

USC it not even remotely good at Drive Efficiency and this is really holding them back. USC often finds ways to get off the field when other teams would be putting up points. They are not great on 3rd down when you weight for the schedule and that is certainly a part of it.

Colorado's defense (#8) is the rock this rebuild is founded on. They have played some great offenses, so looking at the volume metrics will probably deceive you. Colorado's defense was legitimately good last year and they might be great this year. They also are not as flashy as some of the other defenses in the conference with bigger reps (some of which are overblown).

Colorado is among the best in the country at Drive Efficiency. They find ways to get off the field and keep their opponents from putting up points. They are very good at getting off the field on 3rd down. They are also very good at containing Explosive Drives, which is the other outsized component of a unit's Beta_Rank. They are good at creating Negative Drives and D-plus Plays. This isn't a defense with an obvious weakness.

They are only OK at Play Efficiency. They can give up a decent amount of yards per play and that does often translate into points for their opponent when they do, but that is really the only thing they haven't been doing well this season.
