Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The USC offense (#27) is definitely the more consistent of the units USC will run out there. They have played better since Darnold took over and they played pretty well against Colorado last week in a tough game against a tough opponent. The also put the squeeze on a bad ASU defense in a way that their increasingly inept cross town rivals could not. This Arizona defense is a pretty good matchup for anyone, but a USC offense starting to click could have their most effective game yet.

USC is phenomenal at avoiding Negative Drives, best in the country in fact. They don't often go 3 and out and they don't get bogged down by large negative plays after their first first down. They are also very good at Play Efficiency and Explosive Drives. This kind of improvement ins't surprising given how well USC recruits. USC is also very good at preventing D-plus Plays and on 3rd Down relative to their Strength of Schedule.

What they are terrible at is Drive Efficiency. USC takes advantage of field position and superior athleticism to put up points rather than being methodical. You beat USC by making them go the length of the field and keeping them from doing it in big chunks. Basically you increase your chances they misfire on a play call or execution.

Arizona's defense (#84) is really bad again and it really comes down to that they can't stop the run. Washington, UCLA, and Utah all came out in the second half and overpowered Arizona or took advantage of missed assignments. Also when Utah cleaned up its, highly controversial, false start issue, they really did well. That doesn't bode well for Arizona because Utah isn't very good on offense.

Arizona's defense is pretty good on 3rd down when you control for their schedule.

Arizona is pretty bad at everything else and that doesn't bode well. They are not causing a lot of D-plus Plays or Negative Drives and they blitz a lot. They give up a lot of Explosive Drives and they are just as bad at Play Efficiency. They haven't had any turnover luck since the Grambling Game, which doesn't count in the model, so they had better hope for a string of turnovers in this game.
