Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The Oregon State offense (#51) is the metric opposite of its defense. They played well against a terrible Cal defense. Playing well against the terribles on you schedule is what you are supposed to do, so the model doesn't give you extra credit for it.

Oregon State is very good at Drive Efficiency, which is great because, along with Explosive Drives, putting together drives and putting up points is a major factor in Beta_Rank. They are also good on 3rd down and preventing D-plus Plays. The tells the story of an offense that puts together long drives, by not making mistakes.

Oregon State is pretty mediocre at Play Efficiency, they are not very good at Explosive Drives, and they are terrible at preventing Negative Drives. This is a team that doesn't threaten you with big plays and often goes three and out. The key to keeping the Beavs down is keeping them in cycle of 3 and outs.

Utah's defense (#38) looks like they will be good this year, without being great; which is setting them up to look pretty good in a Pac12 full of bad defenses. The worst Pac12 offense clocks in at 75th (UCLA), but the worst defense is at 115 (Oregon) and there are four defenses ranked 80th or lower. So Utah's defense, even if it close to the mushy middle nationally, is very good by most Pac12 standards.

Utah is good at Drive Efficiency and this showed vs. Arizona where they really kept the Wildcats bottled up. They are also pretty good at creating Negative Drives. The are pretty good on 3rd down and at creating D-plus Plays. They do a lot of things very competently and none of them great, but their consistency is a major plus.

They are not at all bad, but they are kind of middling at Play Efficiency and preventing Explosive Drives; that is about the worst thing you can say about this defense. They are only ok at some things.
