The Stanford offense (#75) is still a cloud of dust type of team. They have done enough to get some wins you might not have expected; I thought Notre Dame would win and in hindsight that USC win looks rather peculiar. Stanford's O-line hasn't been good at pass blocking and their QB and receivers haven't shone either; which fine, but you would think with McCaffrey back there you could at least run some draws and screens to slow down the pass rush and also maybe rack up some big plays, but nope.

Stanford is actually pretty good at the less important portions of a unit's Beta_Rank, Play Efficiency and avoiding Negative Drives. Stanford doens't go 3 and out very often and they can rack up some yards per play short of it counting as an Explosive Drive. They are also very good on 3rd down and at D-plus Plays given their Strength of Schedule.

Stanford isn't good at the two most important components of a unit's Beta_Rank: Drive Efficiency and Explosive Drives. The Cardinal struggle with consistency and struggle to break out and get the ball to their speedy wide-outs or get their running backs going. There is some serious dysfunction on this offense and it has to start on the O-line, because I struggle to believe that the QB's they have and a David Shaw coached offense are this bad otherwise.

Colorado's defense (#4) is really really good.  They absoultely smothered a blah ASU offense and you certainly can't blame the USC loss on them. They kept Colorado in the game, even though the Buffs lost the turnover battle by -3. Jim Leavitt should get serious consideration for coordinator of the year nationally. Colorado has played a pretty tough schedule to this point too, so Stanford isn't going something they haven't seen before.

Colorado is excellent at Drive Efficiency and very very good at Play Efficiency, Explosive Drives, and Negative Drives. They are also really on 3rd down and D-plus Plays. This team gets you off the field in a variety of ways and really makes you work for your points. Stanford is going to have a very difficult time putting points on the board without some radical improvement or heroic individual performances.
