The Arizona offense (#45) looked like a unit in free fall last week against an excellent Stanford defense. You don't normally see teams look worse coming off a bye week, but the Wildcats managed it. It was a full team effort. The offensive line and backs struggled to protect the QB and open up holes, the running backs lacked burst and vision, the wideouts continued to fail to get open (though there were a few open receivers that Dawkins didn't see when he was scrambling; usually on his backside), and the QB's didn't throw or run particularly well. So it was an all around shining effort for an offense recruited, developed, and coached by a guy known as an offensive guru. Going up against the Cougars on the road is probably not what this offense needs right now.

Arizona is actually pretty good at some of the per play metrics. They are very good at Play Efficiency and Negative Drives, which is good, but less useful than being better at Drive Efficiency or Explosive Drives. Arizona has been getting less explosive as the season has gone on, but they are still sort of good at them. Even after all the sacks they took vs. Stanford they are pretty good at D-plus plays. They are not bad a 3rd down either.

Arizona is catastrophically bad at Drive Efficiency. This is an incredibly inconsistent and inefficient offense and it isn't just the players, or the execution, a good chunk of this is the play calling.

Washington State's defense (#26) has been sliding a bit as the season has been going on and it isn't as if they have been doing it against top notch offenses. UCLA, ASU, and OSU all put up much better games against the Cougars than you would have expected given how well they played in the early season. It also helps that none of those teams had their top QB healthy for those games and they still hung tight. On paper this WSU unit looks good, but eventually their play is going to catch up with them more, especially since I have an exponential decay built into the model.

Washington State is very good at Drive Efficiency and Negative Drives. They are pretty consistent in games and they get off the field well. They also cause a lot of 3 and outs. This defense does a good job of making offenses work for their points, short of Explosive Drives.

WSU isn't great at Play Efficiency or Explosive Drives. They can give up some yards and sometimes in big big chunks. They are not great on 3rd down or at D-plus Plays. They aren't terrible or anything, but being on the sunnyside of average isn't where you want to be.
