The ASU offense (#70) is sure wishes Mike Norvell were still around to call some wide receiver screens. They have only played better than expected in one game, against WSU, and that game was fairly weird. Other than that good defenses tend to shut them down and bad defenses give up points to them. Utah is more in the middle so it will be interesting to see how well ASU performs in this game.

ASU is actually very good at Drive Efficiency, but the top Drive Efficiency score is Western Michigan's at 1.15 pts per drive and that really skews putting the scores on a number line. They do sustain drives through pretty good play calling and execution, though in smaller chunks of yards. They are pretty ok at D-plus Plays so they are not giving up a ton of really negative plays or turnovers.

ASU is really terrible at Play Efficiency and Negative Drives. They are also very bad at Explosive Drives and on 3rd Down. This team isn't doing a lot right on offense. Sure injuries have been a big part of that, but not all of it. They have had pretty good health at most of their skill positions, but the O-line hasn't been very good.

Utah's defense (#43) always looks better in un-adjusted stats vs. advanced stats. The Utes have great special teams and a slow it down offense that limits possessions per game and that helps you look better than you are if you aren't controlling for all the other factors. I think even the most dedicated Ute fan would admit that this isn't some sort of vintage Utah defense though. Utah is a Western version of Frank Beamer's old formula for burying you with bad field position.

Utah is at various levels of good to very good on all their defensive metrics. They are not great at anything, but they stand out on 3rd down and Negative Drives. The Utes force quite a few 3 and outs; which is deadly when you are facing the Utah special teams. Arizona State has their own top notch special teams for this game and Zane Gonzales will probably be a big factor in any potential upset.
