Washington Offense vs  Colorado Defense

The Washington offense (#5) shellacked WSU. They piled on when their defense gave them opportunities after 4 Coug turnovers. Getting short field will be critical for them against this Colorado defense, who is very good at stopping Explosive Drives. Washington has an incredible offense, but they are not amazing at putting together long methodical drives. It almost feels like they can get frustrated when they are not putting up highlights; like the USC game. Colorado's defense is plenty good enough to slow them down and frustrate them. The Huskies need to hunker down and focus on first downs leading to touchdowns.

Washington is still nearly tops in the NCAA at Explosive Drives. They really push the ball down the field well to their exceptional receivers. They are also great at Play Efficiency and Negative Drives. They get a good push off the ball and they don't go 3 and out or take negative plays. They are less good at Drive Efficiency. They need to work on being, more consistent and putting together long drives. A lot of this is play calling and Browning's decisions, but they are going to run into another defense with great athletes if they make it to the playoff.

The Huskies are not great at 3rd down or D-plus Plays when you control for their SOS.

Colorado's defense (#3) is a monster. Jim Leavitt should win the Broyles award running away and if he sticks around then this team could be even better next year as the offense matures. The key for Colorado is for their excellent secondary to take away the big plays and force Washington to move the ball in small chunks. It is something the Colorado offense is very good at, but the Huskies are less so. If the Buffs can frustrate Browning and Co. and get pressure as he waits for his receivers to come open, they can create turnovers and put their offense in a position to upset the Huskies.

Colorado is excellent at Drive Efficiency, Play Efficiency, Negative Drives, and they are very very good at Explosive Drives, 3rd down, and D-plus Plays. This defense is phenomenal and they have few weaknesses. The key for the defense is for the offense and special teams to not leave them with too many short fields to defend.
