Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The USC offense (#33) has played the utter opposite of ASU's s cupcake schedule. ASU has played the 2nd easiest group of defenses, USC had played the 3rd hardest. While your record ain't great USC, the math salutes you with a ranking 27 spots higher on offense. This ASU defense is ranked worse than Utah State, so USC might have the most fun they have had all season against the Sun Devils.

USC is pretty good at Drive Efficiency, so they put up points when they have the chance. They are excellent at preventing Negative Drives and D-plus plays. USC doesn't put themselves in a hole. They are good on 3rd down too.

An offense that is puts up points when they get they chance, avoids putting themselves in holes, and is good on third down; what are they missing? Explosive Drives and Play Efficiency. USC isn't very good at stretching the defense or breaking away and they don't generate an eye popping yards per play number on their drives.

ASU's defense (#71) hasn't played all that well even as it has faced some pretty stout competition. Their play against UTSA really dings them in the model because UTSA isn't very good at offense. While Texas Tech (excellent) and Cal (very good) are tough offenses, ASU gave up a boatload of yards and points. If Texas Tech and Cal had defenses with a shred of dignity, ASU would have a very different season narrative so far.

Arizona State is pretty good at forcing Negative Drives, a key part of a blitzing Todd Graham defense. They are also pretty good on 3rd down and on D-plus plays. You would expect them to be better on D-plus plays than they are given how often they are blitzing and how good they are at Negative Drives, but thus far they are not one of the better teams at it.

What happens when you blitz? You leave yourself open to getting burned and ASU has given up quite a few Explosive Drives. They are flat out terrible at Drive Efficiency, suggesting they give up more points than you would expect per drive given how well they do on some other metrics.
