Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The Cal offense (#30) is having a pretty good year given how much they lost off of last year's incredible offense. Davis Webb is playing well. Their defense is bad enough that the offense has to carry a lot of weight for the team and can look like they have some tough games, when they are having to go the length of the field. Utah held the ball for an astonishing 44 minutes against Cal, so Cal worked pretty fast in putting enough points to win.

Cal is pretty good at creating Explosive Drives and avoiding Negative Drives. Webb throws a nice deep ball and he has been on the money more often than not when pushing the ball down the field. Cal really needs to connect on some big plays to win games; including this one.

Cal is not great at Drive Efficiency or Play Efficiency. If you can keep them from picking up yards in big chunks then you can increase your chances that they put together a few misfires in a row and get them off the field. They are not very good on 3rd down or at preventing D-plus plays either.

Oregon State's defense (#74) took a tumble in the eyes of the model after getting smacked around by Colorado. They have played a tough schedule and that doesn't change this week. Their offense doesn't do them any favors so the final scores often look worse than they played. They need to keep Cal from big plays in order to keep an upset in reach.

Oregon State is pretty good at containing Explosive Drives, Play Efficiency, and creating Negative Drives. This defense looks a lot like their rival's defense, only not as bad. They are pretty good at a lot of the things that make a defense good.

Sadly, they are terrible at Drive Efficiency. Oregon State struggles to get off the field even as they are not giving up big plays. They are not very good on 3rd down and the struggle to create D-plus plays. This game lines up reasonably well for them in how they match up, but it is a tall order to keep Cal in check for 4 quarter.
