Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The Washington State offense (#12) is going to play a defense with a pulse! The last time they did that, it didn't go so well, so this game could be interesting. The model is still learning about the Cougs, since they played an FCS team and had a bye week already, so there is more potential variance in their numbers than in other teams at this point. Boy do they seem a lot like last year's team in early season W-L, narrative, numbers, but the offense is better. If they can keep that part of it up then the Apple Cup could decide a spot in the Pac12 title game.

WSU is excellent at Drive Efficiency and avoiding Negative Drives. They are also pretty good at Play Efficiency and Explosive Drives. So far this team has been pretty effective running the ball and looks more like a West Coast offense, with Roger Craig at back, in some ways than an Air Raid. They shouldn't mess with it. It is working.

WSU is less good at preventing D-plus plays and on 3rd down weighted by their Strength of Schedule. If they can keep up their numbers as their schedule improves then they should be able to get these numbers up.

Stanford's defense (#32) is coming back to earth and looking more like last year's team.  I would have been shocked to see them improve, from 2015, as many spots as they seemed to have early in the season. I think this defense is better than last year, and not having your top two corners really hurts, but they are not a top 10 defense. They don't really catch much of a break this week in getting Washington State, but that is the Pac12 for you.

Stanford's defense is pretty good at Drive Efficiency, Play Efficiency, and containing Explosive Drives. They are also pretty good at creating D-plus plays. They still tackle well and play very disciplined football. They are middling on 3rd down so far this year.

They are terrible at creating Negative Drives and this is burning them badly. They are simply not forcing enough 3 and outs or getting offenses in big enough holes. If you let offenses get going they can find your rhythm on you and they will make you pay.
