Until Weeks 6-7 the model outputs are directional, but useful

The Colorado offense (#35) had a pretty bad game against a pretty mediocre USC defense. It looks even worse when you take note of the fact that Colorado's defense came up with four turnovers to USC's one. The model dinged them pretty good for the performance, falling from #18 to #35. So they get another chance to prove their metal against a mediocre defense against ASU.

Colorado is very good at Play Efficiency, Explosive Plays, and avoiding Negative Drives. They do a lot of things well and it shows up in the data, but they don't do them consistently.

Colorado isn't good at Drive Efficiency. They fail to do good things consistently and it kills their drives and frustrates them from getting points. They are not very good on 3rd down and or preventing D-plus plays and that certainly explains part of it. Colorado will need to work hard to pick up ASU's heavy blitz schedule and make them pay with big plays.

ASU's defense (#45) has been putting it together better of late. They have played a very tough schedule, buoyed by having Texas Tech's other worldly offensive numbers. They pretty well shut down the utterly flaccid UCLA offense in a way that Arizona was not able to do the week before.

ASU is very good at creating Negative Drives, which is a must, given how often they blitz. When they are connecting they force 3 and outs and create D-plus Plays; which they are good at. They are also very good on 3rd down given how tough their schedule has been.

ASU is on the sunny side of not good on Drive Efficiency, Play Efficiency, and Explosive Plays. This is a defense that struggles to get things done without Graham's high blitz rate. They haven't been burned excessively by Explosive Drives, which is one of the key things to be looking for.
