The Oregon State offense (#60) actually had a pretty good outing against WSU and the WSU defense paid for that with a drop in the rankings; which is to say the model re-evaluated the Cougs's D more than it did so for the Beavers. The Beavers haven't played their best against good defenses, in fact they have a really tough time against them and Stanford is going to be a big challenge for a young offense finding its feet still.

Oregon State is very good at Play Efficiency and D-plus Plays. They are also pretty good on 3rd down considering the brutal slate of defenses they have played. They are on the sunnyside of average on Explosive Drives, but that is faint praise.

Oregon State really struggles with Drive Efficiency and Negative Drives. They go 3 and out regularly and they struggle to keep drives going even when they are getting good yards per play going. This looks like a young offense still looking for consistency.

Stanford's defense (#10) has come out of an early season swoon to really clamp down on Colorado and Arizona in the last two weeks. You can't hold the Washington and WSU games against them quite as much because those are both great offenses and those teams completely shut down Stanford's offense. Even very good defenses struggle when that are constantly asked to defend a short field. The Colorado game is probably better than the Arizona game in the long run. The Wildcats are falling into a dark hole of football despair, or maybe that is just me. In any case Stanford played really well and got very consistent pressure against the Arizona QBs. It helps that Arizona could not take advantage of Stanford's weakness out at corner, but Oregon State might be better placed to.

Stanford is excellent at Play Efficiency and Explosive Drives, they are damn close to excellent at Negative Drives. This defense excels at the per play metrics. Explosive Drives are one of the two big components of Beta_Rank and Stanford tackles so well in space. Stanford is pretty good at the other big component, Drive Efficiency, but they could be more consistent and get off the field more regularly. They are also very good on 3rd down and at D-plus Plays.
