The Utah offense (#48) hopefully took the bye week to try to develop some sort of passing game to complement their rushing attack. Only against UCLA has this offense looked decent and UCLA gifted the Utes some fantastic field position in that game. Otherwise they have been pretty middling all year and that is reflected in the ranking.

Utah is really excellent at Negative Drives. They don't go 3 and out very often and they don't get stuck going backwards if they do. They aren't bad at Play Efficiency either, but not in any way great at it. Those are the two least important factors in Offensive Beta_Rank though. Utah is also pretty OK at D-plus Plays.

Utah is pretty terrible at Drive Efficiency and they are bad at Explosive Drives. They have a lot of stalled drives and they struggle to get out into the open field. This team lacks the ability to stretch the field effenctively. The aren't great on 3rd down either. Utah will have a chance in the game to make more big plays though because ASU's pass defense isn't good and if the Utes can pick up the blitz there should be some open guys.

ASU's defense (#66) isn't going to get Todd Graham that big promotion he has been dying to bring home to the missus. They haven't played all that well against any of the competent offenses they have faced this year, but the record looks decent because some of those opposing defense were bad enough to make the Sun Devils look pretty good on offense to the naked eye. Utah isn't going to be anything too crazy for the Sun Devils who have faced a tough schedule of offenses. I wonder if ASU can put together a game like they did against UCLA's sputtering offense; which profiled in the early season like this Utah offense.

Arizona State is really good at Negative Drives. They force teams into going backwards or 3 and out with their blitz heavy play calling. They are terrific on 3rd down and D-plus Plays when you control for their very rugged schedule.

ASU is very bad at Drive Efficiency, Play Efficiency, and Explosive Drives though. This pretty much sums up ASU, they don't force stalled drives, they let you get a good yards per play, and they give up big plays. Live by the blitz with a bad secondary and you will find guys running free from bad man coverage.
