The California offense (#22) is pretty good, but they suffer, like less good/bad version of Oregon, from the positions that their terrible defense puts them in. The offense played pretty well against WSU's good defense, but the Bear's defense was in no way up to the challenge of the Coug's offense. Cal needs their defense to step in in this game to give the offense short field a few times against a superlative Stanford defense.

Cal is extremely good at Drive Efficiency and Negative Drives. Cal sustains drives and puts up points, even when they are not blowing you away with their yards per play. They don't go 3 and out very often and they are pretty good on 3rd down and at D-plus Plays. Cal is on the sunnyside of average at Explosive Drives, but that isn't great for a power 5 team.

Cal isn't very good at Play Efficiency. They are just average at putting up yards per play and this is hurting them in getting more points on the board. Really they need to focus on being more explosive since that will bring in more points.

Stanford's defense (#8) should make it apparent how hard it is to get timing down in college football. Stanford's 2015 offense and 2016 defense would be a CFB monster that would probably win the national title in either year. This year though it is the defense's turn to carry the team and they have been doing an admirable job of it as the schedule has weakened; setting up the offense with good field position in addition to keeping the opponent out of the end zone. This Cal offense shouldn't be anything different than what they faced last week in Oregon, only less explosive and more methodical.

Stanford is exceptionally good at Drive Efficiency, Play Efficiency, Explosive Drives, and Negative Drives. This team is disciplined, tackles very well in space, and they don't make mistakes. They force 3 and outs. They don't give up big plays and they force you off the field. They are also very good on 3rd down and D-plus Plays.
