The California offense (#20) is pretty good, but they suffer, like less good/bad version of Oregon, from the positions that their terrible defense puts them in. They had a really tough outing against an excellent Stanford defense. UCLA is close to being as good as Stanford on defense so Cal gets another challenge this week. They need to score not just for their own points, but also to put UCLA's mediocre offense in a deep hole.

Cal is extremely good at Drive Efficiency and Negative Drives. Cal sustains drives and puts up points, even when they are not blowing you away with their yards per play. They don't go 3 and out very often and they are pretty good on 3rd down and at D-plus Plays. Cal is on the sunnyside of average at Explosive Drives, but that isn't great for a power 5 team.

Cal isn't very good at Play Efficiency. They are just average at putting up yards per play and this is hurting them in getting more points on the board. Really they need to focus on being more explosive since that will bring in more points.

UCLA's defense (#12) is a mean monster. With everything the Trojans are doing, Washington's resurgence, and the job Jim Leavitt and Alex Grinch are doing, Tom Bradley's stellar job seems to be falling through the cracks. You could say the same for Lance Anderson at Stanford though. They had a tough outing against USC, but a lot of that was the offense leaving them in the lurch with a short field to defend. Cal is good on offense and UCLA isn't balanced enough for the defense to have a bad day and the team expect to win.

UCLA is excellent at Play Efficiency, Explosive Drives, and Negative Drives and they are very good at Drive Efficiency. This defense is really stingy when it comes to yards per play, they don't get burned on big plays, and they force an awful lot of 3 and outs. They are also good on 3rd down.

UCLA isn't great at D-plus Plays when you control for SOS, They need to come up with some big plays in this game to nudge their offense in the right direction.
